Station205 investing in safety
Site safety is a key consideration for any industrial estate. We’ve been working with the team at Biz Safety to implement the latest safety practices at the Station205 industrial estate.
From traffic management to working from heights to design for safety, an industrial site like ours needs to be a safe place to operate for tenants, visitors and contractors, complying with the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 and also innovative practices developed by safety consultants and product suppliers.
All aspects of site and building safety have been reviewed by Biz Safety, and we’ve rolled out several new or enhanced features and site operations to keep Station205 up to date with the latest practices.
Training for key contractors when working at height
As we upgrade and redevelop buildings across the estate, adding new heating and cooling systems has been an ongoing focus. With these new units comes the need for greater access to roofs, combined with safe access to all the roof gutters for cleaning and maintenance.
‘When we conduct site audits, we observe the activities that need to be carried out to keep the property and buildings maintained,’ says Biz Safety’s Shane Sampson. ‘We assess how people are moving around the site and buildings and how they behave with equipment. Then we apply this to the health and safety regulations and best practices, and work out safer ways to carry out each activity.’
With this greater understanding of people’s movement around (and on) our offices and factories, we arranged for on-site training for our core tradie team, which Station205 CEO Andrew Nixon also attended.
We funded half of the cost for our key contractors to attend the two-day course run by Besafe Training, which included working on scissor lifts and other mobile equipment, using safety harness systems and understanding safe practices when working at height.
Not only do our contractors now have new skillsets to open up new business services when working at height, but Andrew also knows the protocols when he commissions the team to maintain Station205 buildings.
New roof access products from Monkeytoe
Following Biz Safety’s site assessment, we built new solutions for roof access that included four Monkeytoe roof hatches, roof clips, and a caged ladder. These provide safe access to key roof areas for the servicing of the air conditioning units and maintaining the gutters. The new anchor points allow contractors to clip their safety harnesses into the best locations when conducting maintenance.
Traffic management for shared spaces
Another of Biz Safety’s recommendations was to implement a Traffic Management Plan. We currently have four tenants all sharing a common area on the easter part of the site. With constant vehicle movements in, out and around the site, we needed to ensure the safety of both drivers and pedestrians. This includes new road markings and signage to make it clear where pedestrians can walk, where trucks can dock, and the location and direction of each vehicle lane.
For Station 205, health and safety is always on the agenda at board level to ensure we’re up to date with health and safety best practices, so our tenants can go about their business confidently and safely. ’I’ve been working with Andrew for the past three years,’ says Shane. ‘We are in regular contact, as he develops the site, and builds and renovates buildings. He is very engaged in doing the right thing and being up to date, evidenced by him attending the safety from height training in person.’
